<image:caption>From dark iridescent bronze, to barred black and white, have you ever looked at a turkey’s feathers up close? While they might seem solid at first, a closer examination shows that each feathers lined with hairlike barbs. And each of those barbs is lined with hooked barbules, that link together like a zipper to form a smooth surface. Since they’re usually plucked before they reach the table, many of us never get a chance to see how beautiful and fascinating these tasty turkeys really are.</image:caption>

<image:caption>There’s much more to see in Barbados than just the beaches. Here’s a timelapse from my walk through Welchman Hall Gully, one of the many lush ravines that criss-cross the Caribbean nation. Fascinatingly, this gully was actually once a cave, until its roof collapsed, letting in the verdant vegetation you see before you. Because of the steep terrain, gullies like this escaped urban and agricultural development, making them a great place to find fascinating animal and plant life, which I’ll make sure to share with you, in future videos. #barbados, #caribbean, #visitbarbados, #travel, #islandlife, #gopro, #BarbadosNature #timelapse, #natgeoexplorer</image:caption>

Unlike most cells that require a microscope to see, this fascinating algae is visible to the naked eye. Which is how I spotted it clinging to rocks at the water’s edge along the sunlit shores of Barbados. Just one of the many fascinating life forms hiding in plain sight, if you pause, take a closer look, and speed up the camera a bit. <image:title>Wildlife Vlog - NOT the Barbados Threadsnake</image:title>
<image:caption>Check out the fascinating article, linked below, featuring researcher Conner Blades, who rediscovered the species after decades of it being presumed extinct! Article: https://www.rewild.org/press/barbados... All that being said, this is NOT the Barbados Threadsnake, the world’s smallest serpent, but on first glance you might mistake it for one. What you’re seeing here is the Brahminy Blindsnake, a much more common, and in fact invasive species to Barbados. Living up to its name, the blindsnake doesn’t see like you or I do. Its simple, scale covered eyes can only detect changes between dark and light. But that’s all it needs for a life in the leaf litter and soil. That might explain how it got all the way from its native Southeast Asian habitat, to the Caribbean nation of Barbados, in shipments of live plants, hence its nickname, the “flowerpot snake.” Thanks so much, Conner, for your guidance and expertise during my 2022 Fulbright National Geographic Fellowship, we didn’t find the Barbados Threadsnake that year (we found plenty of blindsnakes), but I’m really glad you stuck with it and made the discovery in 2025! #WildlifeFriday, #NatureTok, #DidYouKnow, #InvasiveSpecies, #Biodiversity, #BarbadosThreadsnake #natgeoexplorer</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wildlife Vlog - Cane Toad Tadpoles - Barbados</image:title>
<image:caption>What are these tadpoles doing, in the middle of the sidewalk? This is a school of baby cane toads. This invasive amphibian isn’t too picky on where it lays its thousands of eggs, even a temporary puddle like this will do. In as little as 2 weeks, these tadpoles will leave their watery nursery, sprouting legs, shedding their tails, and transforming into the grouchy, slouchy, toads. <image:title>Wildlife Vlog - Barbados Sea Turtle Hatchlings</image:title>
<image:caption>Where’s this little one going? It’s one of Barbados’ tiny Hawksbill hatchlings, beginning a perilous journey from nest to sea. Imagine storming the beaches of Normandy—in reverse. These fragile sea turtle hatchlings have to clamber over steep embankments and cross wide, exposed stretches of sand, all while dodging predators. That’s why sea turtles lay so many eggs—and why hatchlings emerge under the cover of night. In darkness and numbers, hopefully a few will slip past danger and make it to the open ocean. Thank you Dr. Carla Daniels and Dr. Julia Horrocks, from the Barbados Sea Turtle Project, for allowing me to film this amazing natural event! The Caribbean Nation’s location near the equator means the sky shifts in minutes, transitioning from day to night much more quickly than in North America, leading to shorter, but more intense sunsets. A Friday flashback from my Fulbright–National Geographic Fellowship in Barbados.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wildlife Vlog - Barbados Brown Anole</image:title>
<image:caption>What’s that distinctive flash of red? It’s the dewlap, or ‘throat fan’ of a brown anole. Like a reptilian peacock strutting its feathers. The brown anole expands this flap of skin to attract mates and ward off rivals. A Friday flashback from my Fulbright–National Geographic Fellowship in Barbados.</image:caption>

<image:title>Wildlife Vlog - Barbados Crab and Sea Cradle</image:title>
<image:caption>Just what is this crab eating? I spotted this crustacean on the beaches of Barbados, seemingly feasting on a sea cradle—a marine invertebrate related to snails. But take a closer look: is it actually munching on the animal itself, or just grazing on the green algae coating its shell? If you’ve got the answer, drop it in the comments—I’d love to hear your take. A Friday flashback from my Fulbright–National Geographic fellowship in Barbados.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This Timelapse Thursday, here’s a close look at a microscopic banquet. This aspergillus mold is chowing down on a loaf of bread, secreting digestive enzymes from its voracious stringy filaments, and forming midnight black masses of microscopic spores, that can be carried on the wind to new ‘unspoiled’ food sources, continuing this fungal feast.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! During my Fulbright - National Geographic Fellowship in Barbados, I encountered this pair of Scaley-Naped Pigeons, nesting in the ruins of a former mansion, in Farley Hill National Park, Barbados. These striking, crimson eyed birds can actually be found through much of the Caribbean, feeding on fruits and dispersing undigested seeds far and wide through their ‘poop shoots’. <image:title>Wildlife Vlog - Baby House Sparrow</image:title>
<image:caption>Found this baby House Sparrow, what do I do with it? Looks like it fell out of its nest this morning, or maybe during yesterday’s storm. I’ve unfortunately found three dead nestlings in the same spot recently, so I decided to put down a trash bag to try and cushion the fall of any future jumpers. Welp I got my wish, and now I’m not sure what to do with this little thing! The parents are still nearby and making a huge fuss, so I could maybe just put it back in the nest (but then what if it falls again). Or maybe I should call a wildlife rehabilitation center? What do people think. Advice appreciated .</image:caption>

<image:caption>Here’s a dragonfly I freed (quite heroically I might add) from a spiderweb. After filming it flew off, so hopefully it’s in decent shape. Honestly, it’s not the best idea to intervene in the course of nature. But it just seemed like the dragonfly was so big that this particular spider might have had trouble wrapping it up and eating it, which would have made the dragonfly’s slow death in that web a waste! Was I right or wrong for freeing it? Let me know in the comments! Any engagement (including angry comments) helps my analytics</image:caption>

I also did some digging on the internet, and found out that you might be able to find these multi legged monsters on nearby Carribean Islands, and in South America. Apparently, they can can grow to over 7 inches (18 cm) long. Numerous Barbadians have also told me that their bite can be… very unpleasant! <image:title>Bacteria - Bacillus Thuringensies</image:title>
<image:caption>Bacillus Thuringensis is a bacterium that produces toxins, which are deadly to mosquito larvae. For this reason, it is often used as a 'biological control agent' during the early spring, when mosquito larvae begin infesting puddles and ponds. The bacteria shown here are from store-bought tablets. When these tablets make contact with water, the bacteria activate and begin to produce toxins.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I'm happy to say this short film 'A Tardigrade Thank You' earned first place in the Worldwide Non-Student Category, for 2021’s Eco Comedy Film Competition. The prompt for this year's competition asked contestants to name their favorite animal. I of course answered 'tardigrades' (a.k.a. 'water bears'). Well, it turns out the feeling is mutual. These little guys ‘love’ humanity. Thank you very much to the judges involved in the selection process, as well as American University's Center For Environmental Filmmaking and the Nature Conservancy for sponsoring this year's competition.</image:caption>
